Companies are scrapping pension plans; social security is in dire straits

The consequences are debilitating. First of all, a move away from de- fined benefit to defined contribution shift s the liability from employers to employees and can land the employees in a situation where they might not have adequate retirement income. Secondly, from the company perspective, it would become harder for them to attract and retain employees as a defined benefit plan is a very good incentive measure in the hands of employers. The situation is no better for the government, which is in deep waters as more and more companies are lining up at its doorstep for bailouts due to
bankruptcies.

Great White Hope(s)... blacked out!

However, five years down the line, the contribution of existing SEZs to overall exports still remains unsatisfactory (though some may consider it too early to comment). Policy makers may be quick to cite India’s late entry in the SEZ race (compared to China) and the long gestation period of SEZs as a justification, but they can definitely not justify the lack of will of successive governments to address core issues like labour market reforms, which are essential for attracting investment.

Analytically speaking, when compared to all banks in Asia, Indian banks’ share of Tier 1 capital (gross of equity and disclosed reserves) is only 6%, and of gross assets is 6.5% (The Banker, 2005 Annual Issue). While this may seem puny, the fact is that India’s GDP is approximately 7% of Asian GDP; thus proving that even the above ratios are not way off the mark.
