Companies are scrapping pension plans; social security is in dire straits

The consequences are debilitating. First of all, a move away from de- fined benefit to defined contribution shift s the liability from employers to employees and can land the employees in a situation where they might not have adequate retirement income. Secondly, from the company perspective, it would become harder for them to attract and retain employees as a defined benefit plan is a very good incentive measure in the hands of employers. The situation is no better for the government, which is in deep waters as more and more companies are lining up at its doorstep for bailouts due to
bankruptcies.

Great White Hope(s)... blacked out!

4th of July 1910: Here I am in the forgotten desert town of Reno in Nevada, and I’m about to witness what might well be the greatest ‘upset’ the boxing world has seen. Arthur John ‘Jack’ Johnson, aka the ‘Galveston Giant’, a man who baited and beat Canadian champion Tomy Burns to pulp (in a fight that was ‘blacked out’ on television) is going up against James Jeffries, dubbed ‘The Great White Hope’, the great white champion, coming out of retirement to wrest the title of ‘World Heavyweight Champion’ and restore honour to bruised ‘white pride’.

East may be East and West may be West

The sagely doctor demonstrates how to leverage these insights in such a way that an immutable emotional connect with customers will be established. To snip a long story short, Mikunda argues that winning over the heart and mind of a prospective customer cannot be viewed in a disparate light. East may be East and West may be West, but the twain shall definitely meet… much akin to two sides of a coin; you can’t have one without the other!

Bijli does not believe in commoditizing his brand

Bijli does not believe in commoditizing his brand, rather he believes in the 360-degree approach. Says Bijli “we carefully study the demography of the area and the location has to be ultimate, it should be somewhere where there is an appetite to watch movies and there we should be seen as a brand.”

Labour market - IIPM News

However, five years down the line, the contribution of existing SEZs to overall exports still remains unsatisfactory (though some may consider it too early to comment). Policy makers may be quick to cite India’s late entry in the SEZ race (compared to China) and the long gestation period of SEZs as a justification, but they can definitely not justify the lack of will of successive governments to address core issues like labour market reforms, which are essential for attracting investment.

“Intelligent design” - IIPM Publication

Americans who think that schools must only teach the modern theory of evolution. President George Bush, too, has jumped into the fray by proclaiming off-hand that “intelligent design” could be taught in schools. Intelligent design is basically jargon for the strongly held belief that only God could have created such a complex system as the Universe. This has outraged liberals who have been witnessing the steady erosion of secular and liberal values, as far right conservatives capture increasing spaces in civil society.

Nnew regulatory environment : IIPM News

Has the new regulatory environment in the United States – brought on by its spate of corporate scandals – crippled the country’s entrepreneurial spirit and dulled its competitive edge? Absolutely not. There can be no denying that in 2001, two major events significantly impacted the US business environment. First, the well-publicized spate of corporate scandals that began to unfold that year led to the eventual passage of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, with its new legion of constrictive financial reporting requirements and correspondingly severe penalties.

Publication and Research, IIPM

Analytically speaking, when compared to all banks in Asia, Indian banks’ share of Tier 1 capital (gross of equity and disclosed reserves) is only 6%, and of gross assets is 6.5% (The Banker, 2005 Annual Issue). While this may seem puny, the fact is that India’s GDP is approximately 7% of Asian GDP; thus proving that even the above ratios are not way off the mark.

Legalized theft - IIPM News

Legalized theft, which is a progressive income tax, for example, may be both a violation of our natural rights and a monstrous flouting of the intention of America’s Founding Fathers, but nonetheless, we all routinely render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s in this regard; as do we daily bend our fearful necks beneath all manner of petty, state-imposed tyrannies of dubious morality, and of even less demonstrable efficacy.
